“I asked my reflection, How did you get there?”

Video

“The Gift-Wrap & The Jewel” by Wanda B. Goines

I looked in the mirror and what did I see,
but a little old lady peering back at me
With bags and sags and wrinkles and wispy white hair,
and I asked my reflection,
How did you get there?”

You once were straight and vigorous and now you’re stooped and weak,
when I tried so hard to keep you from becoming an antique.

My reflection’s eyes twinkled as she solemnly replied,
you’re looking at the gift wrap and not the jewel inside
A living gem and precious, of unimagined worth
Unique and true, the real you, the only you on earth.

The years that spoil your gift-wrap with other things more cruel,
should purify and strengthen, and polish up that jewel.

So focus your attention on the inside, not the out
On being kinder, wiser, more content and more devout
Then, when your gift-wrap’s stripped away your jewel will be set free,
to radiate God’s glory throughout eternity.

Proverbs

Image

WisdomA 1st grade school teacher had twenty-six students in her class. She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb.

It’s hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. Their insight may surprise you. While reading, keep in mind that these are first-graders, 6-year-olds, because the last one is a classic!

Taking on a New Adventure

If you have read my About Now page, I credit Rick Hotton for his creatures of Holy Mole Comics. Rick is taking on a new adventure.

I have no religious overtones, yet like many creatures blessed with the great fortune of being alive I strive to find meaning and purpose in my seemingly complex existence. It is towards these ends that I struggle with great effort.

Thank you, Rick.

WISDOM STORIES TO LIVE BY

A man was taking it easy, laying on the grass and looking up at the clouds. He was identifying shapes when he decided to talk to God.

“God”, he said, “how long is a million years?”

God answered, “In my frame of reference, it’s about a minute.”

The man asked, “God, how much is a million dollars?”

God answered, “To me, it’s a penny.”

The man then asked, “God, can I have a penny?”

God answered, “In a minute.”

Another rendition of the same story:

A man was talking to God one day, and he said, “God, I have always wanted to ask you this question.” He said, “God, from your perspective how long is a million years?”

God said, “In my perspective, a million years is a second.”

“Wow, a second!” He then said, “God, from your…

The Insupportable Knowledge of Nothing

        Wisdom
~ Thomas Merton

It is essential to experience all the times and moods of one good place

It is essential to experience all the times and moods of one good place

I studied and it
taught me nothing.
I learned it and soon
forgot everything else.
Having forgotten, I
was burdened with
knowledge.
The insupportable
knowledge of nothing.
How sweet my life
would be if I were
wise!
Wisdom is well known
when it is no longer
seen or thought of.
Only then is
understanding
bearable.
