The Door is Open

The Door is Open

The Door is Open

This is no ordinary door. It is a place where they serve FREE hot breakfast, hot meals, sandwiches, coffee, juice and desserts to complete a full meal for the hungry, especially the homeless with mental health and addiction issues.

They serve more than meals.

It’s an oasis for many to find support, friendships and spiritual help provided by the staff and volunteers. They find comfort, safety and joy at The Door.

I am one of the volunteers. Recently, due to COVID-19, I have to distance myself.  I miss coming here and not to be of service to the community. It is a place I have a sense of belonging.

The Door is Open is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by taking extra precautions, keeping updated with changing directives from BC health officials. In order to minimize the risk of spread of the novel coronavirus, we are limiting gatherings: we have stopped serving meals in our dining room, but continue to serve from our side window and front door. We are grateful to the small core team of volunteers and staff who will continue their dedicated service to our guests. As noted by UGM, the people we serve in the DTES are amongst the most vulnerable to medical concerns like COVID-19, and it’s important that we all do our part to prevent spread and potential outbreaks amongst the homeless and street-entrenched. Thank you for doing your part by staying at home as much as possible during this unusual time!

In the comfort of my home, all I can do is offer prayers and joined an online prayer group.

While we face the coronavirus pandemic, let us turn to the face of God in prayer and ask for His healing, His help and His protection.  We will pray for all who are affected, for all who are sick and suffering, for all those who work in the medical profession, and for those who have died as well as for their grieving family members.

  1. I’m so sorry you had to disconnect from the service Perpetua – but one day soon we hope to be able to return to normal life. In the meanwhile stay safe and trust in a higher power.
