Roses are red … So are you?

A singular rose caught my attention amongst other plant growing on a dry garden bed. With its red flower and sweet fragrance, it stood so proudly by itself while other plants are withering from the summer heat. Then it reminded me of a short rhythmic poetry written as a symbol of love.

Roses are red, violets are blue
Sugar is sweet, so are you.

The poem became an earworm that must be annihilated and replaced by a different version from impressionism, surrealism, social realism, pop art, conceptual art, subversion, anti-humor, parody or better yet, meme.

Impressionism
Roses sway in softened reds
Violets swim in murky blues.
Sugar sparkles in the light,
Blurring into golden you.

Surrealism
Roses are melting
Violets are too.
Ceci n’est pas le scure.
David is a giant crab.

Pop Art
Roses go BLAM!
Violets go POW!
Sugar is COOL!
You are so WOW!

Social Realism
Roses are dead
Violence is rife.
Don’t sugar coat
This bitter life.

My version
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Here’s to wishing
I can write.

  1. That is such a lovely shot, and love how you framed it. That rose certainly looked like it was really strong, standing tall and mighty all by itself. And that is such a wonderful poetic response – quite a few stanzas too which all flow into each other. Roses do start our pretty but like every living organism, they eventually wither away as you alluded to in your words. Yes you can write…and write so creatively too πŸ™‚
